George R.R. Martin Says Forthcoming Novel ‘The Winds Of Winter’ Will Be “Quite Different” From ‘Game Of Thrones’ Storyline

George R.R. Martin has hinted at the plot of his new novel, The Winds of Winter, the sixth installment in the A Song of Ice and Fire saga that inspired HBO's Game of Thrones series.

Martin discussed his creative process on his website, emphasizing that "yes, some of the things you saw on HBO in GAME OF THRONES you will also see in THE WINDS OF WINTER (though maybe not in quite the same ways)." However, much of the rest will be very different.

Martin's final volume in his series was published in 2011, and the HBO TV series boosted the saga's popularity.

That has led to some dissatisfaction with the 73-year-old's novel output, especially as the television series expanded beyond the books, resulting in a less satisfying finish for some.

"Another question I receive frequently, especially since the conclusion of GAME OF THRONES on HBO, is whether A SONG OF ICE & FIRE will finish in the same way.

n architect might be able to respond in a brief, concise, and straightforward manner, but I am more of a gardener.

My stories develop, evolve, and change as I write them. I generally know where I'm headed. The ultimate destinations and set pieces of A SONG OF ICE & FIRE have been in my thoughts for years, if not decades.

There are many demons in the details, though, and the ground sometimes shifts beneath my feet as the words stream forth."
