'Dune: Part Two' rides great reviews, starry young cast to $81.5 million debut

"Dune: Part Two" appears to be the movie theaters' salvation, as it was promised.

Denis Villeneuve's science fiction epic, armed with sandworms, big-screen extravaganza, and TimotheŁe Chalamet's star power, stormed the North American box office this weekend, grossing $81.5 million, according to studio projections Sunday.

The film made $97 million abroad, boosting its total earnings from its global premiere to $178.5 million...

Producing both "Dune" movies, Mary Parent praised the movie as "a really extraordinary and special film."

"It was made for the big screen and it feels like it's being received as a cinematic event," she stated. The much-needed "Dune" sequel is the first big smash of 2024, according to exhibitors.

The box office is experiencing a bit of a drought, despite a few December standouts that have managed to earn money, such as "Wonka," which also stars Chalamet, and the romantic comedy "Anyone But You," starring Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney.

As of now in 2024, no domestic picture has made more than $100 million. "The Beekeeper," "Bob Marley: One Love," and "Mean Girls" have garnered the highest box office receipts."Dune 2"
